What is a Pediatric Dental Emergency?
Pediatric dental emergencies can vary from unexpected toothaches to injuries from play or sports. Here are a few steps you can take to assist during a common childhood dental emergency:
- Knocked-Out Tooth: If your child's permanent tooth gets knocked out, try to find the tooth. Hold it by the top, not the root, and rinse it gently without scrubbing. If you can, put the tooth back in place and have your child bite down on a clean cloth. If you can't put it back, keep the tooth moist in milk and reach out to us right away.
- Chipped or Fractured Teeth: After rinsing your child's mouth with warm water and applying a cold compress to reduce swelling, it's important to gently clean the area around the broken tooth. If possible, locate the broken tooth fragment and keep it moist by placing it in a container with milk or saliva. Bring the tooth fragment with you to our office so our dental team can assess the situation.
- Severe Toothache: Clean the area around the sore tooth thoroughly. Rinse your child’s mouth with warm salt water and gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between their teeth. If the pain continues, please get in touch with us at your earliest convenience.
- Dental Abscess: An abscess is a concerning infection that can harm tissue and spread if not addressed. If you spot a pimple-like swelling on your child's gum, reach out to us as soon as possible.
